Lot Essay

This mirror is one of a set; three are known but they have incised numbers on the reverse that suggest that the set was longer. The seraphim mask and apparent length of the set together suggest that they may originally have been in a church.
The third known mirror from this set was also in the Sykes collection and was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 6 July 1995, lot 59
