Lot Essay

In a recent letter, dated July 30, 1995, Eitner states that in his opinion this is not by Géricault. 'I am familliar with this dramatic and dashingly painted study...Unfortunately, no alternative attribution comes to mind. The very painterly and slightly lush handling does not suggest any of the neoclassical ateliers of the time, nor do I see any trace of the younger generation of the 1820's.'
We are grateful to Professor Eitner for his help in cataloguing this picture.
