A Shell-Ground and Lacquer Writing Box (Suzuribako)
Edo Period (mid-late 19th century)
The rectangular box designed on the cover in gold takamaki-e with two Chinese lions, tree-peonies and rocks on a background of aogai (brilliant pieces of iridescent shell) which also decorate the sides of the box, the cover design also enriched by okibirame, togidashi, uchikomi, hiramaki-e, silver and red lacquer (the tongues of the lions), and the bevelled edges of the lid drawn with floral scroll in hiramaki-e on a gold ground; the underside of the lid ornamented with a scene of a scholar on horseback and an attendant crossing a bridge toward rocks and hills and pavilions, and with distant hills in the upper right, the ground nashiji, the river continued on the two utensil trays where geese descend toward others nestled on the shore; fitted with a removable silver-rimmed brush tray and removable tray with inkstone, also rimmed by silver and lacquered on the sides in fundame, and an iron kettle-form mizuire gilded with striated clouds and fitted with a silver arched handle, the saucer of the water dropper shakudo with gilded petal-edges; rims of the box silver, base roiro and nashiji
