A Reverse-Painted Oxhorn-Applied Cosmetics and Mirror Box (Hwagak Kyungdae)
Choson Period (19th Century)
Rectangular, with flat lid hinged at the midsection and one end which covers the mirror compartment, the mirror now removed, and with two long, rectangular drawers, the lid applied with rectangular oxhorn panels reverse-painted in green, yellow, black and red with two panels of paulownia sprays and two panels of confronted phoenixes, the faces of the drawers also applied with reverse-painted oxhorn panels in the same pigments of two seated Buddhist figures, a tasseled fan and tasseled lotus below a panel of two lotuses; each long side also applied with reverse-painted oxhorn panels of matching colors, eight square panels to a side of tigers, stags, elephants, rams and lotuses, and the side opposite the drawers applied with four square panels of lotuses; the borders of the lid and drawers horn and the fittings metal, the interiors of the compartments black lacquer
