Lot Essay

In his autobiography (The Second Burst, London, 1951, p.216) Munnings describes Vivian Hugh Smith, later Lord Bicester, as 'owner of famous steeple-chasing horses of to-day, unassuming head of an irrepressible family', and his home, Weald Hall in the South Weald, 'unlike any other house I had known. It was the growth of centuries'.
