MAKER'S MARK OF CORNELIUS BLAND, LONDON, 1781, THE MINIATURE BY JOHN SMART, SIGNED WITH INITIALS AND DATED 1781

Oval, the interior of the double lid with an oval miniature of Mrs. Richard Milnes, facing left in lace bordered white dress, fur bordered lilac coloured surcoat with string of pearls, string of pearls, feather and gauze scarf falling from her upswept powdered hair, in bright-cut gold border, on tortoiseshell ground, the borders of the cover, sides and base of the box chased and engraved with beads on a matted ground, marked in the base and covers and on the flange, in original shagreen case

Lot Essay

Richard Slater Milnes (1759-1804), of Fryston Hall, Co.York, M.P., City of York, married 30 May 1781, Rachael (d.1835), daughter and (at the death of her sister Marianne, the wife of James Milnes) sole heir of Hans Busk, of Bull House, by Martha his wife, daughter and heir of Richard Rodes, of Great Houghton, co. York, and Martha his wife, sister and heir of Aymer Rich of Penistone. The grandson of Mr and Mrs Richard Slater Milnes was Robert Offley Ashburton Milnes (1858-1945), 2nd Baron Houghton, Earl of Crewe, Earl of Madeley and Marquess of Crewe (see L.G. Pine, The New Extinct Peerage 1884-1971, London, 1972, p.89)

John Smart (1742/3-1811) is considered one of the greatest or even the greatest English miniaturist in his period (Schidlof, The Miniature in Europe, Graz, 1964, p.762)
