Having entered into a collaboration with Messrs. Heaton and Lascelles, Shaw produced a small collection of furniture for the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Among those pieces exhibited was:"...A wardrobe in vermilion and gold,..." (Furniture Gazette). The best description of the construction of the piece comes from The Building News, March 23, 1877:"Another production is a wardrobe of American ash, with canted sides. Internally this is divided into a central compartment composed of slides and two angle cupboards... Each angle is in two cants..."
The present piece is the right-hand end of a wardrobe of this design, its pair being in a private British collection. The whereabouts of the cornice and central section are unknown.
