Lot Essay

This refined but plain bookcase relies on its elegant proportions combined with well chosen timber. The design of the glazing bars is similar to that on a bookcase design included in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd ed. 1762, pl. XCV; whereas the lower panelled doors with re-entrant corners (pans coupés) filled with roundels occur on much of Chippendale's documented work, for example a secretaire-cabinet supplied to Ninian Home for Paxton House (see: C. Gilbert, Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, fig. 91)
