INDENTColonel John Forster Manifold, C.M.G. (1857-1933), entered the Royal Artillery as Lieutenant, 1877; Captain 1885; A.D.C. to the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab 1886-87 and Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of the North West Province of India, 1892-94; Major 1894; served during the South African War, 1899-1901 and took part in the operations in Natal which included the actions at Talana and Lombard's Kop; commanded the guns of 67th Battery in the defence of Ladysmith (was specially Mentioned by Sir G. White in his Despatch of 2nd December, 1899; C.M.G., 1900); commanded the 1st Brigade Div. Royal Field Artillery from January to June and July to October, 1901; was present during the operations in the Transvaal, November 1900 to October 1901 and those on the Zululand Frontier of Natal, September 1901 (Mentioned in Sir H. Buller's Despatch of 9th November, 1900); Lieut. Colonel 1902, Brevet Colonel 1905; retired 1907
