[WAGHENAER, Lucas Janszoon (1534-1606). The Mariners Mirrour. London: 1588?].
2 parts in one volume, 2° (400 x 280mm). 45 double-page engraved sea charts of the coasts of Europe. (Some light browning and soiling, lacking the first six preliminary leaves before A1 including title, dedication and arms, also lacking B3 with the engraving of the instrument uranicall and B4, and with the engraved frontispiece to the second part replaced by a blank, small section of map 16 in the first part excised, general chart of Europe detached with lower margin browned). The copy stitched with remnants of a late 19th century binding on spine; sold not subject to return.
The first edition in English of Waghenaer's Spieghel and the first nautical atlas to be published in England. It was compiled by Anthony Ashley, clerk to the privy council, apparently ordered by Sir Christopher Hatton, the Lord Chancellor. The work was probably translated from the Latin edition of the 1586 Spieghel, and produced quickly for the use of the government and selected sea captains for the defence against the Spanish. This copy has watermarks as follows; charts 1-9, all grapes; charts 10-XXIII portcullis, preliminaries A and B have portcullis or nothing; C grapes or nothing. A rare atlas, Koeman records 9 copies, Wardington 22 and a further 2 copies have appeared at auction since the Wardington census of 1988. Cf. Wardington article Map Collector 45 pp.32-35; Koeman IV Wag 13; NMM 3 184.
