(Some old dampstaining and spotting.) 19th-century sheep incorporating earlier morocco lettering-pieces on spines (extremities lightly scuffed). Provenance: Athelstan Riley, seigneur de la Trinité (bookplate, inscriptions dated 1884).

It is the dictionary itself which justifies Noah Webster's statement that 'Johnson's writings had, in philology, the effect which Newton's discoveries had in mathematics'" (PMM 201).
