Lot Essay

John Miller's engravings for the most part faithfully reproduce his drawings, although there are some differences. His drawings sometimes give sizes which are not present on the engravings, and he has annotated 2 drawings with the word "modern".
This is the third and grandest of the publications dealing with the Arundel Marbles. Brunet describes it as a "magnifique edition". They were first published in 1628-9 in 4to, and again in 1676 with illustrations by Humphrey Prideaux.
Joseph Alsop says, in his The Rare Art Traditions" (1982), that "..the proud Earl of Arundel, 'Father of Vertu' in England, was one of the truly great collectors of the seventeenth century, given to sending his agents all over Europe and even the Levant to secure prizes for his collection. Arundel House, particularly famous for its classical marbles, soon became a required place to visit for all foreigners interested in the arts who came to England."
