Field was probably the most accomplished of the foreign born miniaturists painting in America. In 1790 he enrolled in the drawing class of the Royal Academy: he went to Baltimore in 1794 and after visiting New York, he settled in Philadelphia. This portrait was painted in the area of Washington DC and Maryland where he was working from 1800-1805
