Lot Essay

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo was inspired by the lost picture of The Baptism of Christ painted by his father, when he produced his series of drawings on that theme. Numerous studies are in Stuttgart; thirteen sheets from the Beauchamp album were sold in these Rooms, 15 June 1965, lots 6-18, and six others are in the Robert Lehman Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Although the painting by Giambattista was oblong, all the drawings in the series are upright, J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London, 1962, pp. 33-4
