Lot Essay

Several similar studies for portraits share the same English provenance. Many of these bear the mark of P.H. Lankrink. The drawings seem to have passed en bloc into the collections of the portrait painters Richardson, Hudson and Sir Joshua Reynolds. These drawings probably left the artist's studio in bundles and many of the sheets are now in the British Museum, A.M. Hind, Catalogue of Drawings by Dutch and Flemish Artists in the British Museum, London, II, 1923, pp. 60-72, 24 entries. Others were sold in these Rooms, 23 June 1970, lot 79, and 9 June 1981, lot 74
