Lot Essay

As d'Hulst recognised, this drawing is of circa 1645-50. The composition was followed more or less closely in a picture last recorded in the possession of Dr. Benninghaus, Oberhausen. The group of Callisto and the two nymphs beside her is based on earlier pictures of the subject which d'Hulst records in the collection of Mrs Ruth K. Palitz, New York and in a private collection at Courtrai: two studio copies of the latter are listed by d'Hulst
