A very rare blue hussar-style tunic of the 23rd Cavalry, with scarlet collar and cuffs, edged and trimmed with gold chain-gimp, the collar edged with Vandyke lace, five quadruple rows of black square cord, with Austrian knot finials, in front, plaited chain-gimp shoulder-cords with plain buttons, bearing Captain's badges of rank, an incomplete tailor's label inside collar, inscribed W C Plant Esq (date illegible); and a pair of blue cavalry-twill overalls with 1¾in. scarlet cloth stripes

Lot Essay

William Charles Trew Gray Gambier Plant was originally commissioned into the 20th Hussars in September 1895. He transferred to the Indian Army in 1898, and joined the 3rd Punjab Cavalry. The regiment was restyled 23rd Cavalry in the major reorganisation of 1903. Plant was promoted Captain in 1907.
