Private J. Peat was Mentioned in Despatches for his gallantry during the disastrous attack by the Highland Brigade at Magersfontein on 11.12.1899, an action that resulted in the award of three Victoria Crosses. Lieutenant-General Methuen, who commanded the attack that decimated the Highland Brigade, singled out just a few men for individual recognition, Private Peat among them:
'Highland Light Infantry: Corporal Shaul [subsequently awarded the V.C.] brought to notice several specific cases of bravery when in charge of Stretcher Bearers of the Battalion. Privates Peat, Richmond and Stewart did excellent service and set a good example to their comrades' (London Gazette 15.2.1900 refers).
Peat was later Mentioned in Despatches by Lord Roberts (London Gazette 4.9.1901 refers).
