Lot Essay

D.C.M. London Gazette 5.8.1915 'For conspicuous gallantry and ability on the 12-13 May 1915, east of Ypres. He frequently went out under a heavy fire, and at great personal risk, and repaired the telephone lines. Mainly through his great courage and exertions, communication with units was maintained throughout the operations'.

Sergeant Herbert Shaw, D.C.M., was killed in action on the 'First Day of the Somme' on 1.7.1916, while serving in a Signal Company of 4th Division. He is buried in Serre Road Cemetery No. 1, Beaumont Hamel.
