A Pair of Small Lacquered Wood Figures of Officials
Late Ming/early Qing dynasty, 17th century
Each bewhiskered figure wearing long belted robes and an official's hat, with both hands raised to one shoulder and draped with a cloth, the hands of one official supporting a small recumbent cat, the other a miniature court cap, the dark hardwood covered with a thin dark reddish-brown lacquer

Lot Essay

Stylistically these figures are very similar to ivory figures of late Ming dynasty date, such as that of a man holding a dish of peaches, dated Wanli-Chongzhen (1573-1644), illustrated in Chinese Ivories from the Kwan Collection, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1990, no. 52.
