Lot Essay

In a letter dated June 23, 1975, to Mr. Falk, the fellow collector William Winkworth writes from London of "a lovely Buson hanging scroll I at once recognized from having seen it here--now (Adrian Joseph tells me) in your collection! This cost 1,593 yen. The frontispiece (or Lot 1 in the sale)." This refers to the catalogue of an auction at the Osaka Bijutsu Club, November 23, 1923, the subject of Mr. Winkworth's enthusiastic letter about the merits of "charming Nanga pictures at prices which don't correspond to present market values."
