Hayter presumably made a sketch of the Coronation in the hope that a commission for a finished picture of the subject would follow, but as no such painting can be traced, such a commission was apparently not forthcoming. Correspondence between the artist and Sir Robert Peel reveals a similar tactic used when he made a sketch of the Coronation of Charles X in 1825.
