The turreted structure in the centre is the Grote Houtpoort at Haarlem, which was built in 1500 and demolished in 1825. A drawing of it which Dr. Beck identifies as having been used for the present picture is in a van Goyen sketchbook of c.1644-9 (H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, I, 1972, p.269, no.845/77; for drawings of the gate from different angles, see ibid., p.194, no.577, and p.217, no.669, illustrated)
