Finely painted in miniature with the Mother of God at the centre of the complex composition, superimposed on prisms of red and blue light painted en grisaille with angels holding attributes and the symbols of the Evangelists, and forming an eight-pointed star, the corners of the panel with representations of Old Testament visions prophesying he coming of Christ, with Moses before the Burning Bush, (Exodus 3, v. 2-5, the Prophet Ezekial before the closed gate that 'God alone may enter' (Ezekial 44, v.1-2), the Prophet Isaiah's vision of a seraph who held a burning coal (Isaiah 6,v.6), and Jacobs Ladder, (Genesis 28), each described with a gilt inscription on the sand-coloured border

Lot Essay

The icon of the Mother of God of the Burning Bush is reputed to have been brought to Russia from Sinai during the late 14th Century. It is associated with protection against fire and was used as a talisman during the Moscow fire of 1648, after which Tzar Alexis constructed the Church of the Burning Bush.
