Lot Essay

In 1858 Burges designed an entire suite of bedroom furniture, including the above lot, as a wedding present for his friend and patron the Reverend J.A. Yatman of Winscombe, on the occasion of his marriage to Anna Turner. The "Yatman Suite" represents the summation of Burges' early oeuvre in the Jacobean manner, the same year saw the appearance of a more painterly style of decoration in a commission from the deacon's brother H.G. Yatman
