The Gothic form of these pieces combined with vari-coloured veneers and geometric tile patterns is typical of Charles Bevan's Gothic furniture of the 1860s. It relates to the inlaid and tile-mounted sideboard which he designed for the 1868 Exhibition held on the premises of Messrs. Gillow in Oxford Street. Charles Bevan (d.1883) styled himself as 'artist, Medieval designer and Medieval cabinet-maker' and his work was exhibited at various international exhibitions in the second half of the 19th Century.
