XVS stands for Exceptional Vineyards Selection, a limited production wine of high quality. The 1985, magnificent by any standards, was the first of these new class of reserve wines from Rutherford Hill. Grapes from the Spring Lane Vineyard are blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec from the Jaeger family vineyards near Rutherford. The wine is aged two years in Nevers oak barrels in the Winery's hillside caves. The 1986 vintage was also excellent for Napa reds, its long cool growing season briefly interrupted in September, followed by an "Indian Summer" which produced full ripe grapes - and mouthfilling wines.
