Lot Essay

The Farnese Hercules: signed by Glycon of Athens, was found in the Caracalla Baths in 1540 and formed a centrepiece of the Salon d'Hercule in the Palazzo Farnese, then under construction by Alessandro Farnese, later Pope Paul III; it is now in the National Museum in Naples. Fuseli's schematic drawing has parallels in other drawings of his Roman period such as the apparent life-study S. 600
