Lot Essay

The pose may reflect a figure in Signorelli's frescoes in the Duomo at Orvieto and is also close to one on the right-hand side of Michelangelo's last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, Rome. Somewhat similar figures appear in Fuseli's hagan attacking the Ferryman of 1805 (S. 1393) and Polyphemus hurling the Rock at Odysseus of c. 1819 (1010)
