A FINE GERMAN HUNTING SWORD with tapering single-edged blade (some pitting), cut out for the fore-finger at the base, back-edged towards the point and etched at the forte with two gilt equestrian figures in contemporary dress, and panels framing animals of the chase amongst trees, one dated 1661, and iron hilt comprising beaked handle, the pommel chiselled as an eagle's head en suite with the terminals of the half knuckle-guard and short rear quillon, oval side-ring and inner thumb-ring, chiselled in relief with foliage and rosettes framing hunting scenes and , on either side of the grip, a strapwork cartouche framing an armoured horseman in front of buildings, in original leather-covered scabbard (leather replaced) with deep iron chape chiselled en suite with the hilt, and double pocket for the iron by-knife and bodkin, each with handle en suite with that of the sword, the single-edged blade of the knife struck twice with a trident mark, dated 1661
