Ottoman, late eighteenth century

gouache and gold on paper, in the form of a central floral spray rising from a vase flanked by two cypress trees, a roundel above flanked by two drop-shaped panels, each motif inscribed, on a gold ground of dense flowering vine, in a border of inscription cartouches between blue and gold flowering vine stripes, (slight tears and staining), in a contemporary frame with hinged door, the surround of gilded wood heavily carved with rococo floral motifs, a similar pediment above, (slightly scuffed)

Allan F Vigers, purchased in 1904.
A note on the reverse of the frame states 'I bought this with some of the money I received for decorating a copy of the Doves Press Tennyson in gold and colours for Her Majesty Queen Alexandra, presented by the Hon. Reginald Sister on Her Majesties birthday, 1904' signed and with the AVF monogram

Lot Essay

The inscriptions are as follows:
Central roundel with profession of faith, right hand medallion with 'Allah' and tree with the beatific names, left hand medallion with 'Muhammad' and tree with titular names, central rose with Fatima, Hasan and Husayn together with the names of the ten companions of the prophet, border cartouches honouring the Sufi Shaikh Sadr al-Din.
