AN OTTOMAN MOTHER-OF-PEARL AND TORTOISESHELL VENEERED PENBOX of rectangular form with hinged cover and polygonal ends, the top with a central tortoiseshell cusped panel with mother-of-pearl spandrels and cusped central roundel, a similar polygonal panel at each end, the sides with similar panels containing six-pointed stars, the upper edge with zigzag motifs made from rhino-horn and walrus ivory, the lower edge similar with ebony and bone, the top of the lower section with silver and hardwood banding, later silver hinges and hooks, 17th century (areas of damage) velvet lining
