Lot Essay

In the treasury of the Topkapi Saray there is a rock crystal flask that is octagonal in section with each facet carved with lateral grooves. It is further encrusted with jewels and set in gold. This is ascribed to the seventeenth century (Rogers, pl.56). Rock crystal continued ot be carved for the Imperial court in the nineteenth century when shapes and decoration were derived from cut glass imported from Bohemia.
