SMITH, Charles and Son. Smith's Terrestrial Globe; exhibiting the whole of the discoveries to 1834. London: C.Smith and Son, 172 Strand, circa 1834.

A terrestrial pocket globe, diameter 3 ¾ inches (95mm). 12 hand-coloured engraved gores, titled in the Pacific Ocean, the globe marking the tracks of Cook's third voyage, La Perouse and Vancouver, thinly varnished, metal pinions (a few cracks neatly restored). Contained in its original shragreen covered case, metal clasps, interior lined with hand-coloured engraved celestial gores (slightly rubbed, case rubbed and slightly warped).

Charles Smith was a publisher and mapseller, known principally for his plans of London, maps of the British Isles and his county atlas, The New English Atlas, produced in competition to John Cary's New and Correct English atlas. His involvement in miniature globemaking undoubtably stems from the competitive spirit between Smith and Cary.
