WILSON,James and Co. A Three Inch Terrestrial Globe; A Celestial Globe with all the stars of the 1st, 2nd & 3rd magnitudes. Albany [New York], undated [circa 1820].
A pair of American terrestrial and celestial miniature table globes, diameter 3 inches (75mm), overall height 4 1/2 inches (115mm). Each sphere with 9 engraved gores, hand-coloured in outline, square ruled cartouches, the prime meridian through Washington, metal pinions, (celestial severely cracked and carefully restored, the terrestrial with two small cracks, neatly repaired, revarnished). The globes mounted horizontally on bobbin-turned fruitwood table-stands with ebonised bun feet.
An attractive pair of miniature globes by one of the earliest and most famous American globemakers. James Wilson (1763-1855), set himself up in the business of globe-making in Bradford, Vermont in 1809, moving to Albany in 1818. At Albany he traded as James Wilson and Co. from 1819-22, then as James Wilson and Sons from 1822-35. Wilson was able to undercut the price of imported English globes by a considerable margin, and gained a significant share of the American market.
