BETTS, John. New Portable Terrestrial Globe compiled from the latest and best authorities. London: John Betts, 115 Strand, circa 1860.
Terrestrial collapsing globe, maximum diameter 15 inches (38cm). Eight coloured lithographed gores printed on linen, stitched over a black japanned umbrella-type frame, brass coloured caps (globe slightly dust soiled with one early repair). Contained in original wooden box with advertisement on verso of lid (lightly worn, lid detached).
The first issue of the Betts umbrella globe; Betts died circa 1863, and the publication of the globe was taken up by George Philip & Son in 1880, who probably purchased the stock of the business. Cf Lanman Folding or Collapsible Globes Der Globusfreund 35-37, 39-44.
