Ludivico and Giovanni Leoni, both pupils of Gaspare Griffoni (1640 - 98), like their contemporaries Giovanni Pozzuoli (1646 - 1734) and Giovanni Massa (1660 - 1741) flourished in Carpi, producing scagliola table tops inspired by the Grand Ducal Workshops in Florence. Though the coronet would suggest that this slab was commissioned by the aristocracy, no count Mauro dal Pozzo is recorded at this date. An alternative interpretation is that this table top follows a design by the Milanese artist and architect, Andrea Pozzo (1642 - 1709), who is known to have worked near Modena.
