Lot Essay

The original, monumental group of Louis XIV, designed by Girardon and cast by J-B. Keller was unveiled in 1699. Many bronze reductions survive, several of which are contemporary casts (Souchal, op.cit.). However, firm dating of the majority of the casts is extremely difficult (Dusseldorf, op.cit.)
