Lot Essay

Hindley are recorded in the Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1986, p.433 as existing circa 1820-30. These dates are suggested by stamped pieces of furniture rather than archival evidence. The present lot probably dates from the 1860's so it is more likely that the previous recorded pieces were things the firm had traded rather than made. A. C. Hindley is however recorded at 32 Berners Street, off Oxford Street as 'Carpet-warehouse' in both the 1824 and 1835 Post Office Directories. The link is tenuous but it is possible that there is some connection.
