The use of the highly formalised rose motif in this chair suggests an acknowledgement of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose work had been exhibited for the first time in Vienna in 1900, and published in Ver Sacrum in 1901.
Urban's designs for furniture and interior schemes, perhaps even more so than those of mainstream Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstätte designers, reflect the enduring strength of influence of the Biedermeier period on the Viennese 'Modern Movement'.
