Lot Essay

For the Lutrario Dance Hall, in collaboration with Alberto Bordogna, Mollino created one of the most spectacular designs of his career. In the unlikely setting of the suburbs of Turin, he produced a fully integrated, extravagant scheme with multi-coloured neon lights, polychrome tiles, mosiac floor, brightly coloured furniture, a painted wrought iron staircase and deep blue curtains spangled with 'stars' which hung from curved tracks on the ceiling. The interior has survived essentially intact and it is still possible to sense the 'architecture of persuasion' which Mollino practised throughout his life.
