A PAIR OF ITALIAN LEAD-MOUNTED BLACK AND GILT-JAPANNED BRONZE AND GILTWOOD JARDINIERES
Late 18th early 19th Century
Each with a bowl decorated with star-motifs and associated inset tin-liner above a foliate clasp and a central shaft, on a circular panelled plinth with three outset angles with kneeling male caryatids, the plinth with pearled swags and small trophies above a further pearled rim, restorations, losses to the lead mounts, one inscribed in pencil to underside 'No. 5', the heads of the figures with holes to the back of their heads, the bronze jardinieres and central shaft either associated or originally with a further section to the centre

Lot Essay

A pair of Italian giltwood torchères probably executed in Genoa and supporting identical jardinières, although the Atlases wear fig-leaves and slightly differing central stem supports the jardinière is displayed in the Palazzo Quirinale, Rome (A. González-Palacios, I Mobili Italiani, Milan, 1996, pp. 243-244, fig. 90).
