A GERMAN OR AUSTRIAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE with swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves, hatched over its entire length, and retaining some of its silver-damascened decoration including flowerheads and a crowned double-headed eagle, flat lock with integral wheel-cover pierced with a stylised heart and damascened with silver scrollwork and a standing figure firing a cannon at a fortification, fruitwood full stock with fluted fore-end (cracked), the butt inlaid with earlier mother-of-pearl and white and green-stained horn plaques finely engraved with flowers, monster-heads, putti, and standing figures in contemporary costume, and below the lock with the figure of Venus, the patch-box cover with a fish, silver-damascened trigger-guard, set trigger, engraved horn butt-plate and fore-end cap, later horn ramrod-pipe, and horn-tipped ramrod, circa 1650
