Engraved frontispiece, title vignette, one folding map, two illustrations, 23 initials, 23 headpieces, nine large woodcut initials by George Edwards (tear to lower margin of F2 in vol.I). CONTEMPORARY BLACK MOROCCO GILT BY ROGER BARTLETT OF OXFORD, covers panelled with a double-fillet outer border, an outer panel described by a thin floral roll with cornerpieces composed from two floral tools, the inner panel with a wider floral roll with inner and outer floral cornerpieces, seven compartment spine with raised bands, one decorated and lettered, the others with overall decoration made up from a repeated floral roll, marbled pastedowns, g.e. (upper joint weak and slightly split). Provenance: Thomas Osborne, Duke of Leeds (1631-1712, armorial bookplate, dated 1701); A.E. (armorial bookplate); Richard Jennings? (reference in inserted letter); Alan G.Thomas (loosely inserted letter concerning the book).
FIRST EDITION. Possibly bound for presentation to the Duke of Leeds, either at the time of the books publication when he was lord high treasurer of England and Charles II's chief minister, or in November 1695 when Oxford University made him a Doctor of Common Law.
