INDENTCaptain Theodore Crean, born 1880 Manchester, served with the Lancashire Fusiliers (Militia) in the South African War, obtained a regular commission 1902; employed with the West African Frontier Force for some years before transferring to the Northants Regiment, 1908; Captain 1913. Attached to the Royal Flying Corps, Captain Crean, whilst flying as an Observer, artillery spotting, was shot down by our own troops who mistook the early Union Flag emblem on his aeroplane for an Iron Cross - this incident led to the adoption of the Roundel Cockade (Bond of Sacrifice, Stonyhurst College Memorial Book and War in the Air refer)

Captain Elgie Blyth Barwise Jefferson, born 1896 Isle of Man, was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Liverpool Regiment May 1914 and Lieutenant in March 1915; is shown as Flight Commander, Royal Flying Corps September, 1916; a Temporary Major in 1917 and Captain August 1918; he held various Staff appointments, 1914-18 (Mentioned in Despatches twice; Croix de Guerre 1917, wounded the same year). A report in the Times 23 May 1919 states "Missing Channel Pilot - Machine and Despatches Found. Captain Elgie Jefferson of the Isle of Man, left England on Monday piloting a machine carrying despatches for Paris. The machine and despatches have been recovered from the English Channel but there is no trace of Captain Jefferson. It is feared that when the aircraft fell into the sea, the pilot was drowned" An unconfirmed report states that "On 15 May a DH.4A flown by Jefferson and carrying the Netherlands Food Minister, Mr Aaronsohn, came down in the Channel during a fog and both occupants were drowned"

Lieutenant Colonel Frederick William Lucas, O.B.E., Royal Air Force, late R.N.V.R. and R.N.A.S. an airship specialist, held a number of appointments from 1914 to 1918 including 2nd i/c Airship Dept. Admiralty, Airship Adviser to the French Government, the Italian Government and the American Government, i/c Transatlantic Flight of R.34 (see Lot 338); retired with rank of Lieut. Colonel (Tonbridge School and the Great War 1914-18 refers).
