INDENTLieutenant Reginald Charles Hope Bewes, born 1890, Plymouth and educated at Clifton College and Sandhurst was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Liverpool Regiment, 1910 and advanced to Lieutenant September, 1913 where he is shown as Royal Flying Corps Reserve; he had previously obtained his Pilot's Licence (No. 523) in a Cauldron Bi-Plane at Central Flying School Hendon 17 June, 1913; seconded to the Royal Flying Corps 5 August 1914. Lieutenant Bewes was killed in action whilst piloting an R.E.5 of 7 Squadron 23 May 1915; G.H.Q. reports (copies with group) indicate the aircraft was brought down by our own artillery. However page 70, Royal Flying Corps, states "...Lt Bewes with Lt Hyland was flying towards the enemy trenches in France, when a hand grenade they had with them exploded." They are both buried in Vieux-Berquin Communal Cemetery.
