INDENTCaptain John Herbert Joseph, educated at Bedford School, enlisted as a Private on the outbreak of war and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, March 1915 and became attached to the 17th Bn. from the 21st Bn. Liverpools. Captain Joseph was killed in action in the attack on Pilckem Ridge, 1 August, 1917 and was buried in Zantvoorde Cemetery, Belgium. "... Captain Joseph with great initiative, took forward part of his Company and re-established the line where the shells were falling thickest. He got his men into position with great skill and then himself took cover in a shell hole in order to write me a message on the situation. A shell pitched practically in the same crater in which he was sitting and killed him instantly..." (extract from C.O.'s letter)
