INDENT Lieutenant Surtees Sheffield, born London, educated at Godolphin School, enlisted in the Middlesex Imperial Yeomanry early in 1900 as a Trooper, served in South Africa and was Mentioned in Despatches and promoted Corporal by the Commander in Chief "For gallantry in attack on Retief's Nek, Orange River Colony, 29th April, 1901" (London Gazette 20.8.1901); he was commissioned shortly afterwards but resigned at the end of the war and went to Malaya where he employed himself in rubber planting until the declaration of war, 1914 when he returned, becoming a Lieutenant 13th Bn. Hampshire Regiment 29 January, 1915; proceeded with the 2nd Bn. to Gallipoli 25 May, was wounded in July and invalided to Alexandria. Lieutenant Sheffield returned to his Regiment 1 August and was killed in action five days later whilst leading his Company in an attack on the Turkish trenches before Achi Baba (Mentioned in Despatches - London Gazette 5.11.1915.) He is commemorated on the Gallipoli Memorial (Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, Vol II refers)
