Second Lieutenant Francis William Alexander, born 1896, educated at Stoneygate School, Leicester and Trinity College, Perth, volunteered for active service on the outbreak of War and was gazetted to the Yorkshire Regiment 22 December 1914; transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders 13 February 1915; proceeded to France 1 June 1915, joined the 2nd Seaforths and was appointed Machine Gun Officer. One month later, 3rd July, he was sniped in the head while returning to a working party in a communication trench at Zwaanhof Farm, Belgium - he was killed instantly (Ruvigny's Roll of Honour Vol. II refers)
Second Lieutenant Frank Laing Macrae, born 1881, educated at Cheltenham College and University College, Oxford, trained with the Public Schools Bn. from the outbreak of War until early 1915 when he was commissioned into the 8th Seaforths. He was killed in the Battle of Loos 25 September 1915 after leading the remnant of his men to the furthest point ever gained in that action - they carried Hill 70 and were at the outskirts of Lens when they were overwhelmed and cut off.
