INDENT Lieutenant Arnulf Montgomery, educated at Tonbridge School was commissioned into the East Surrey Regiment from the Militia and served during the South African War 1900-1902, resigned his commission and spent a time in British Colombia; he returned to England, was appointed 2nd Lieutenant Connaught Rangers 4 August 1914 and proceeded to France 9 October with the 2nd Bn., taking part in the Battle of La Bassee. Lieutenant Montgomery was killed by a sniper's bullet whilst fixing a loophole at Festubert 23 December, 1914. At the time of his death he was improving the parapet of a trench in which his men were situated - he exposed himself for a few seconds and was shot dead
